Sedro-Woolley has made it easy to comply with the dog licensing requirements. The animal control ordinance is intended to be owner-friendly. To make it easier for the City to keep the streets enjoyable and the dogs safe, we have provided the following guidelines for dog owners.
- Dog tags are free, and do not expire, under the terms of the present ordinance.
- Tags are required if your dog is over three months old.
- It is illegal to permit your dog to be "at large". "At large" means to be off the premises of the owner and not under the control of the owner or of an authorized person over 12 years of age, either by leash or otherwise.
If a dog is found roaming unattended, the following will occur:
- If tagged, the dog will be returned to his or her owner, provided there is a secure location to leave the dog (i.e., a fenced yard).
- If tagged, and the dog is found "at large" on a frequent basis, the dog owner will be cited.
- If the dog does not have a tag, he or she will be placed in our kennel and held for up to 3 days.
- Before an impounded dog is returned to the owner, the owner will be required to pay a $25.00 impound fee, and any veterinary costs incurred in the care of the animal.
- After 3 days the dog will be taken to the Humane Society. To retrieve the dog, the owner will have to pay a $25.00 impound fee to the City of Sedro-Woolley, plus a $66.00 Humane Society impound fee.
- Anyone cited for an animal code violation (e.g., no tag or dog at large) is subject to a mandatory court appearance, and to a fine (not to exceed one thousand dollars) or imprisonment (not to exceed one year in jail), or both.
- Animals must have a current rabies vaccination.
- If you dog bites or threatens to bite a person, or kills or injuries another domestic animal, it may be declared a dangerous dog or potentially dangerous dog, which will subject the owner to strict requirements including a $250-$500 annual registration fee, mandatory insurance, and a mandatory kennel requirement.
You may obtain a free license for your dog at the Sedro-Woolley Police Department, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Vacation Checks:
(For residents within the city limits of Sedro-Woolley only)
To obtain a vacation check, please submit a Vacation Check Form to the Sedro-Woolley Police Department, 325 Metcalf Street. Vacation checks are done by retired senior volunteers. While you are away, your residence will be checked by our volunteers, noting any unusual conditions and inspecting the premise of your home during your absence. There is no charge for this service. However, if you would like to make a donation to the Sedro-Woolley Police Department, we continue to show our appreciation to our senior volunteers with supplies, luncheons, awards, etc.
Criminal History and Records Checks
For a Criminal History Check (usually state-wide) we refer people to the WATCH Program by the Washington State Patrol. They can be reached by calling our local WSP office at 360-757-8907, or online at https://fortress.wa.gov/wsp/watch.
For a Local Records Check (for our agency only) please fill out a Request for Public Records Form. Our Records Division can supply a letter with information regarding our agency's records of a person's history. There is a $10.00 fee for this service.
All property and evidence requests need to go through the Evidence Tech at the Sedro-Woolley Police Department. Anyone having questions and/or needing property or evidence released should call the Sedro-Woolley Police Department and ask for the Evidence Tech. The Evidence Tech will determine if the property is eligible for release, and will then arrange for an appointment. If the Evidence Tech is not available, please leave a phone number and message so that they can return your call. There is no charge for this service.
Found/Recovered Bicycles:
(For residents within the city limits of Sedro-Woolley only)
Registration stickers are available at the Sedro-Woolley Police Department front desk, Monday through Friday, 8:30am to 5pm. We encourage residents to come in and register their bicycles. In the event your bicycle is found or recovered, the Police Department will contact the registered owner of the bicycle and make arrangements to return it. Citizens are welcome to inquire at the Sedro-Woolley Police Department for missing or stolen bicycles that are not registered. There is no charge to register your bicycle.
